It Takes A Village

I sit here alone. My wife and daughter at the doctor’s office. My brother at work. My folks both taking a nap. Temps dropping into the tolerable range outside. Windows open. Breeze blowing in. Mine is a life and house at peace.

My mind wanders. I look up from my laptop and stare out the window at my neighbors tree. The wind and neighborhood voices rustle it’s leaves and I hear my Dad gently snoring in the next room. My world feels very Zen today. Wait…

Mom is up. She is wandering aimlessly. Freezer door opens. Closes. Opens. Closes. Chairs are shuffled about. There’s the frig door now. Open. Close. I better go check. Hang on… She’s setting in the living room. Now Dad is up.

“Where am I at?“ You’re at home. “Where’s my family?‘ We’re your family. “No I mean my family.“ We are your family. “Who are you?“ I’m your husband Donald. “Where are my parents?“ They’ve been dead for years. “Am I alone?” etc.

Caring for an Alzheimer’s patient is like caring for a toddler. If you’ve done either you know what I’m talking about. You’re always on high alert and the best you can ever hope for are moments, just brief moments, of peace in your life.

But when they happen they are precious and wonderful and energizing and cherished. I love my Mom but she is very high maintenance. Hillary Clinton said it takes a village to raise a child. It takes one to care for those with Alzheimer’s too.

On The Inside Looking Out

It is my growing personal opinion that the end-result of prolonged introspection is depression. Maybe that explains the angst that is the daily fodder of many blogs.

How often do we fail to live up to our own internal, predetermined expectations? The reality is life seldom turns out as we imagined it would in our youth.

The irony of this opinion is not lost on me. I’m blogging too… about my life no less. So is this a case of the pot calling the kettle black? Am I not just as guilty?

Probably. But I can’t help wondering, if I spend my time looking inward - and by extension backwards - (I’m preaching to the choir now) what becomes of today?

Introspection has a purpose. You can’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been but it’s a slippery slope from introspection to self absorption.

The key, as with most things in life, is moderation. I also think it short-sighted to assume that introspection is the primary tool available to the blogger.

What if we were to look at and write of our lives more in terms of its external rather than its internal impact? In terms of the people in it than of ourselves.

There is a famous quote by John Donne that illustrates my point. No man is an island, entire of itself every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.

Our lives are, and our blogs could be, as much about impact and influence - no matter how insignificant we consider our existence - as it is about anything else.

All I’m trying to say is focusing on the world we live in and the people that occupy it not only gives us perspective but provides a truer picture of who we are.

The Way Tuesdays Were Meant To Be

I spent the entire day with my wife and soulmate Missy.

She had a rough morning and since we were both off today I packed her up and the two of us made a day of it.

We went to the library and picked up some new reading material then headed to the nearby lake where we sat reading our books and soaking up the sun (i.e., did a lot of sweating) all afternoon.

Then we headed over to one of our favorite restaurants, Tasty Tacos, for some of their ~~world~~ locally famous flour tacos. I know I said today was going to be a fast day but I knew Tasty Tacos would cheer her up so the fast got bumped to tomorrow.

After tacos we went and saw The Bourne Ultimatum. Very intense. Very good. Missy and I give it two thumbs up.

I had the best day with my best friend. We’ve been to hell and back that woman and I and, cliche or not, I love her more today than the day I married her 28 years ago. She really is my world. I don’t believe in God but I believe in her.

Yep… today was a good day. Love ya Miss.
